Madison River Retreat

Madison River Retreat

We were involved in a special renovation project on an existing home, built in the early 1970's and located along the Madison River south of Ennis, Montana.  The result is a functional and artistic landscape.

The home is located along a well-traveled road that creates a considerable amount of undesirable noise.  Berms were installed to create privacy and provide wind and noise protection from the road.  A custom entry gate was incorporated for security and interest.

The fire pit is located in a space away from the house to create a Montana campfire experience - under the stars while enjoying the view and sounds of the Madison River below.  We designed a custom fire ring and cover surrounded by flat topped boulders for benches.  For larger gatherings, outdoor furniture can sit amongst the boulders for additional seating.

The design process included working with Madison County to develop needed permits to work near the riverbank.  Natural slabs of stone and boulders create a safe connection to the water that was missing.  Creating this new connection also allowed us to stabilize the bank and control erosion in this area.  We incorporated a small seating area near the top of the stairs for one to enjoy the incredible view while being tucked in out of the wind.

Low voltage, LED landscape lighting creates safe travel to and from patios and along stone walkways and highlight unique features at night.
